Preliminary Sketches – These sketches are examples of my finished sketches that precede the color development of an illustration. The sketch work can be done with ink washes, pencil or charcoal and rendered very loosely or very tight and controlled.
The very first sketches during the development of an illustration are rough thumbnails and compositional studies. Ultimately the rough drawings become more polished medical sketches that you see in these examples. Finally, the finished sketches evolve into the full color illustrations that you see in the other sections of the portfolio.
I have also included several pen and ink studies that demonstrate a finished black and white technique. And lastly, I have added 3 nature illustrations just for fun!
I hope that this section will give you insight into one of the steps involved in the creation of custom medical illustrations.
