Illustrations of pathology, surgery or diagnostic medicine are found in this portfolio. Drawings are often much more effective in conveying complex anatomic and clinical information than text alone. Imagine telling the parents of a newborn child that the child has a condition known as transposition of the great vessels of the heart. The nomenclature alone would be enough to impose more confusion into a difficult situation. When the surgeon uses a series of illustrations to help visualize the condition, the entire surgery required to correct the malformation is made easier to understand. The most powerful tool a medical illustrator can create is a tool to assist in complex communication.
